We Did Not Want to Make Just Another Seder Plate

When we look at a Seder table, we do not see six small portions of food. We see a family gathering around a story that has been carried for generations. We see children asking questions, parents answering them, grandparents remembering earlier tables, and familiar words returning once again.

That is the feeling we wanted this piece to hold. So instead of treating it as a simple tray, we built the design around Jerusalem, carved each ritual place into the wood, and surrounded the plate with symbols that feel rooted in Jewish memory and continuity.

Every Part of the Design Was Chosen to Say Something

We wanted the eye to travel around the plate the same way a family moves through the Seder: from symbol to symbol, from question to memory, and always back to the larger story.

Why We Chose Beechwood

We Wanted It to Feel Warm Before Anything Was Placed on It

Ceramic can feel formal. Metal can feel cold. We chose beechwood because wood brings warmth to the table before the candles are lit and before the first blessing is spoken. You can see the grain, feel the carved depth and notice the small differences that make one piece unlike another.

We also wanted the details to have real dimension. The Jerusalem scene, Hebrew lettering, Stars of David, recessed ritual sections and outer ornament are carved into the form so light and shadow become part of the design.

We can carve the wood and prepare the plate. The part that gives it real meaning happens later — when your family places the ritual foods into it, tells the story again, and brings it back to the table next year.

That is the reason we make it.
