Nach allen vier kanonischen Evangelien machte Jesus unmittelbar nach dem letzten Abendmahl einen Spaziergang, um zu beten. Jedes Evangelium bietet einen etwas anderen Bericht über narrative Details. Die Evangelien von Matthäus und Markus identifizieren diesen Ort des Gebets als Gethsemane. Jesus wurde von drei Aposteln begleitet: Petrus, Johannes und Jakobus, die er bat, wach zu bleiben und zu beten. Er bewegte sich "einen Stein wurf von ihnen entfernt", wo er überwältigende Traurigkeit und Angst empfand, und sagte: "Mein Vater, wenn es möglich ist, lass diesen Becher an mir vorbei ziehen. Trotzdem lass es so sein, wie du es haben würdest, nicht ich." Dann, eine Weile später, sagte er: "Wenn diese Tasse nicht vorbeigehen kann, aber ich muss sie trinken, dein Wille ist erledigt!"
